(am Speed and Skating Development,
pm Puck Skills and Playmaking)
The ice session has players learning from and skating alongside Olympians, PWHL Pros, National Women’s Team members, and College players. This popular combined program concentrates on power/speed development in the a.m. session, followed by important puck skills practice in the p.m session.
Learning to play the game FAST, we focus on all aspects of speed development from technical, power and agility work to quick transitions and play-making. Key emphasis is on acceleration, explosive starts and evasive tactics, with a good portion of our time performing the challenges with pucks.
The p.m. program concentrates on offensive tactics, and it’s assumed that the player has a solid base in other skills, particularly skating. *Note that this program is beneficial to forwards and defence, and often players are separated for position-specific drills. The program begins with developing proper shooting and passing techniques, then progressing to various challenges that will introduce and reinforce important concepts such as;
- Controlling timing, creating availability
- "Reading" to create space for yourself and others, recognizing opportunities
- Many passing reps in all situations, including using deception
- Many shooting reps, including deception, screening and deflecting
- Quick releasing, changing angle to your benefit
These are up-tempo, demanding but fun workouts. Along with two ice times, the program includes a daily off-ice session that is meaningfully connected to that day’s drills so that players are “thinking” the skill when they hit the ice.
